- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 diced yellow onion
- 1 diced green bell pepper
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
- 2 cups freshly shredded cheddar cheese
- Hamburger buns (for serving)
Instructions
- Brown the Beef and Veggies: Place a large, oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Add the lean ground beef and cook until fully browned. Add the diced yellow onion and diced green bell pepper, cooking until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Simmer the Sloppy Joe Sauce: Stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and apple cider vinegar. Mix well and bring to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Get Cheesy: Remove the skillet from heat and stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese until melted. Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
- Melt and Serve: If the skillet is oven-safe, place it in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 5-8 minutes until the cheese is bubbly. Alternatively, cover the skillet and let it sit on low heat for 5-7 minutes until the cheese melts.
