Description

A delightful cookie with a hint of orange and spices, topped with a sweet glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 tablespoon finely grated orange zest
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons fresh orange juice for glaze
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves for glaze
  • 1 tablespoon finely grated orange zest for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and ground cloves in a medium bowl.
  3. In a separate large bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together until light and fluffy.
  4. Mix in the orange zest, egg, vanilla, and orange juice until the batter looks creamy and smooth.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture in two additions, mixing just until a soft dough forms.
  6. Cover the bowl and chill the dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes so the cookies bake thick and tender.
  7. Scoop heaping tablespoons of dough, roll into balls, and arrange them on the prepared baking sheets about 2 inches apart.
  8. Gently flatten each ball with your fingertips to form thick discs.
  9. Bake one sheet at a time for 10 to 12 minutes or until the edges look set and the tops are pale and just beginning to turn golden.
  10. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Whisk together the powdered sugar, orange juice, and ground cloves for the glaze until smooth and pourable.
  12. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled cookies and sprinkle with extra orange zest before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure your butter is softened for easier mixing.
  • Chilling the dough is essential for thick cookies.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container.
