Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and ground cloves in a medium bowl.
- In a separate large bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Mix in the orange zest, egg, vanilla, and orange juice until the batter looks creamy and smooth.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture in two additions, mixing just until a soft dough forms.
- Cover the bowl and chill the dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes so the cookies bake thick and tender.
- Scoop heaping tablespoons of dough, roll into balls, and arrange them on the prepared baking sheets about 2 inches apart.
- Gently flatten each ball with your fingertips to form thick discs.
- Bake one sheet at a time for 10 to 12 minutes or until the edges look set and the tops are pale and just beginning to turn golden.
- Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Whisk together the powdered sugar, orange juice, and ground cloves for the glaze until smooth and pourable.
